In simplified terms, climate is the sum total of atmospheric influences on a place including solar radiation,
precipitation, temperature, wind and surface cover. Together, the processes of these elements help shape the normal and
extreme atmospheric patterns of a place. Temperature and precipitation help govern limits and ranges
of plants and animals. With few plants growing in the arctic climate and an unknown diversity at tropical
climates, the Midwest harbors a great diversity of life unique only to this regions’ climate.
